The ball mill is a cylindrical drum (or cylindrical conical) turning around its horizontal axis. It is partially filled with grinding bodies: cast iron or steel balls, or even flint (silica) or porcelain bearings. Spaces between balls or bearings are occupied by the load to be milled.
The Overflow rod mill is applied to wet grinding. The Center Peripheral Discharge rod mill is also used for wet grinding but produces a coarser product than the overflow type. Either the End or Center Peripheral discharge rod mill can be used for wet or dry grinding. Whatever the type, the rod mill is used to produce a coarse product, whereas the ball mill is used to produce a finer product.
A major issue for pump operators occurs if sediment or large foreign objects from the ball mill cause the pump to become ‘bogged’. At FMR, bogged pumps can occur if wear in the mill trommel allows a large rock or steel mill ball to pass into the pump, or if there is an unexpected electrical mains failure on site.
