These new solutions are often presented, and can be installed, as discrete projects. But they are most effective when seen holistically. For example, Woodgrove recently merged with the process control supplier Portage Technologies, allowing it to deliver equipment and process monitoring as one package. Woodgrove can now offer a froth characterization system to measure froth velocity, stability and colour; and bubble size, count and density, and it can provide timely suggestions for changes to equipment settings. Additionally, its upfront grinding and cyclone control can stabilize surges and prevent rocks from reaching the flotation circuit.

Maoming Fan graduated with a B.Sc, M.Sc and PhD in mineral processing engineering from China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT), where he was appointed as an associate professor in 2002. He received his second Ph.D. degree in mining engineering from the University of Kentucky (UK) in 2008 with an emphasis in minerals processing. At the University of Kentucky, Maoming was responsible for a variety of lab and pilot scale evaluations including enhanced froth flotation through the use of ultra-fine bubbles (i.e, picobubble flotation). In 2009, Maoming was hired by Eriez Flotation as a process engineer. He has authored or co-authored over 85 technical papers, edited 10 book chapters, and has been awarded three patents. In addition, he and his coauthors received the 2009 SME Stefanko Best Paper Award.

The Millennium Iron Range now hosts other taconite deposits. The first is the Lac Ritchie property located at the north end of the Range. The initial 2011 drilling of 40 holes in this property revealed Indicated Resources of 3.330 billion tonnes at an average grade of 30.3% Fe, and Inferred Resources of 1.437 billion tonnes at an average grade of 30.9% Fe (see news release NR 12-11, dated April 02, 2012).

The mine was estimated to hold 1.89 billion tonnes of proven iron ore reserve (grading 40.2% Fe) and 1.08 billion tonnes of probable iron ore reserve (grading 38.9% Fe) by the end of 2012. Production in 2012 was 21.8 million tonnes and the life of the mine is projected to continue up to 2053.
Although the vertical mill has high equipment cost, the vertical mill integrates grinding, grading and drying, and the equipment is compact, simplifying the process flow, saving capital investment, and having strong drying ability. It can be dried by using auxiliary heat source, high grinding efficiency, power consumption can be reduced by more than 30%.
