Rod mills came into use in the United States beginning in 1900s and eventually became recognized as efficient fine crushers. The 1st ever built rod mill (2 m in diameter by 4 m long) was to be installed at a mine where a coarser feed was required for shaking tables. Crushing rolls and rod mills were eventually used commonly to prepare feed to shaking tables. Later, rod mills of 2.9 m in diameter by 3.9 m long replaced most roll crushers.

When the fines are subjected to flotation in step (e), this is done by adjusting a fines slurry from the classifier to a desired percent solids for flotation, for instance in a thickener, and feeding the same to a bank of rougher flotation cells which would normally be optimized to obtain maximum flotation recoveries, typically above 95%. Besides concentrating the copper values in the fines fraction into a small tonnage which simplifies the leaching process, flotation also allows discarding of the non-mineralized tailings and removal of the natural fines and clays from the process prior to leaching, thereby facilitating the leaching process and particularly the liquid/solids separation. Depending on the ore and mineralogy, a cleaner stage may also be appropriate. Generally, a rougher concentrate will produce a concentrate grade of between 5 and 10% copper, which is adequate for this process.

There are various types of units that can be used for the calcination of phosphate ores, such as [1]:Vertical-shaft kilns [33],[34]: are the most popular type of kilns, having varying heights, diameters and constructional details. It also has the flexibility of a vertical roller mill in grinding of different materials. A larger angle of nip draws the material bed into the grinding gap and reduces wear as compared to vertical roller mills. The recirculation of material within a vertical roller mill is very high. The recycle ratios are 15 or more, but it is practically impossible to measure the recycle ratios in a mill operating on the airflow principle. Material bed passes many times through the stressing gap, and it is possible to adjust the number of stressing during operation in a Horomill®. Also an internal bypass can be implemented if some of the ground material is returned from the mill outlet to the inlet. The external recycle ratio of a Horomill® connected in a closed circuit lies between four and eight and is therefore lower than with a roller press (HPGR) and vertical roller mill [14].
